Woman watching the shadow of a pine branch cast by the moon

shadows_of_the_pine_branchesThis picture illustrates a verse by the celebrated haiku master Takarai Kikaku (1661-1707):

“Bright moon – across the tatami mats shadows of pine branches” (printed October 1885).

Based on the hairstyle, the round uchiwa fan, and several other style elements, this design probably is a homage to Utamaro (1754-1806)

Τι όμορφο!! Νιώθω τη θαλπωρή του δωματίου, τη δροσιά της νύχτας..
